🔥 Now, Sequence of Tenses

Sequence of Tenses means:
👉 When we combine two or more clauses in a sentence, we must keep the tense relation proper and logical between them.

📚 Rules for Sequence of Tenses

Main Clause TenseSubordinate Clause Tense
Present/FutureCan use any tense needed
PastGenerally past tense used

🎯 Simple Rules:

1. If the Main Clause is in Present or Future,

👉 Subordinate Clause can be in any tense as needed.

Example:

  • He says that he is tired. (Present tense in both)

  • She will say that she has finished the work. (Future + Present Perfect)

2. If the Main Clause is in Past,

👉 Subordinate Clause usually takes Past tense.

Example:

  • He said that he was tired. (Past + Past Continuous)

  • She said that she had finished the work. (Past + Past Perfect)

🧠 Important Points:

  • Universal truths stay in Present tense, even if the main clause is Past.

    Example:

    • He said that the sun rises in the east. ✅ (not "rose")

  • If the action of the subordinate clause is still true or a habit, use Present tense.

    Example:

    • She said that she likes coffee. ✅
